The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a $12 million marketing plan that would allow doctors to prescribe AstraZeneca’s proton pump inhibitor Nexium for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients.
The plan includes prescribing AstraZeneca’s Nexium as a second-line treatment option for patients with GERD who had not previously been prescribed the drug.
The drug will be available through the FDA’s online pharmacy program. If approved, the plan will be available from Oct. 21, 2023.
The approval will help protect patients from costly drug costs that could have a significant impact on their health. The drugmaker’s plan could significantly reduce the cost of the drug by up to 85 percent.
